Excellencies:

Millions of people experienced unprecedented losses on both sides of the India-Pakistan divide in the tragic aftermath of 1947 Partition. Hundreds of thousands perished; some of those who survived still carry scars from that traumatic period in our history.

Although India and Pakistan became independent 57 years ago, the bitterness of that period has continued to blight their relations.

Now that the enlightened leadership of India and Pakistan appears to have finally decided to make a determined attempt to settle their differences, the bitter 1947 chapter in their common history needs to be revisited with compassion and reason, and a long-delayed tribute paid to their memory of the victims.

We feel that the most appropriate way of commemorating the victims lies in the raising of a suitable monument at the Wagha-Attari border in the Punjab.

We hope that this memorial will serve an enduring symbol of peace, goodwill and amity and a declaration to the world that the peoples of India and Pakistan have turned their back on conflict and the most bitter chapter in their common history.

We are confident that Your Excellencies share our sentiments and that you would take steps to translate our dream into reality.
